How to apply flea treatment to your cat

Before your cat comes to stay at Cat Hotel Stoney Creek we need you to make sure it is free of fleas (and worms) and has been treated with a vet- approved product, so all our guests will be as comfortable and healthy as possible.

Please make sure you treat your cat regularly with a proper vet-approved flea product all year round. At check in, we will ask you what date you treated your cat and what product you used and we write it in your cat’s record. Monthly topical flea treatments (used on the skin in the back of the neck) are Advantage, Frontline, Revolution, Advocate and Nexgard spectra. A monthly oral flea treatment is Comfortis. Then there is Bravecto topical flea treatment, which lasts 3 months.

Some flea products treat (some) worms, too. Nexgard spectra (and Broadline before that) is the only flea treatment that treats all worms as well. Revolution, Revolution plus, Advocate and Bravecto plus treat some worms, but not tapeworm, so you will still have to use a 3-monthly allwormer treatment.

At Cat Hotel Stoney Creek we use Advantage topical flea treatment and Endoguard allwormer tablets.

It is not very difficult applying flea treatment:

It may help to have two people – one person to apply the flea treatment and one to hold your cat (see ‘How to give your cat a pill’).

Make sure your cat is on a stable non-slip surface such as the floor. A firm table or work surface with a non-slip surface works well, too.

Allow your cat to sit upright in front of you, facing away from you.

We find it easiest to use a flea comb to part the fur, just behind the head. If you apply the flea treatment too far back (e.g. between the shoulder blades), your cat may be able to turn its head and lick some off.

If you look at the pictures below, you see that you make the part about the same length of your thumb.

Then you apply the flea treatment directly on the part, so it is in contact with the skin, along the whole length. Your thumb holds the fur out of the way.

You can then use the flea comb to gently comb the fur back over the wet part.

Make sure you don’t touch your cat in this area until it is completely dry. For this reason, applying it just before bedtime may work best.
